Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about saddle points—the low points and concave bowls—between mountain peaks.
And, as thought leadership practitioners, it’s easiest for us to do our job when we’re “on the top of the mountain” and have a clear view in every direction. That’s how we peer into the future and discern insights.
Over the past year, many thought leadership practitioners have shared with me that they lacked a clear view of the horizon. We suddenly found ourselves trying to practice thought leadership within the saddle points.
- The world has changed quite rapidly.
- ‘Rock-solid assumptions sometimes collapsed.
- The impossible became reality—often overnight.
As thought leadership practitioners, we’re guaranteed that we will encounter saddle points as we move from peak to peak. So, if you find yourself dealing with a saddle point, here’s my advice:
- Seek elevation as soon as possible.
- Perform a quick environmental scan
- Lock on to the horizon
That’s how you regain the visibility you need to practice thought leadership.
