Organizational thought leadership practitioners are a lot like journalists. 📝
We get a ‘hunch’ of insight, do our research, and then share what we’ve learned with our organization — and the world.
So, if you want to get better at practicing thought leadership, adopt the mindset of a journalist covering a “beat.”
How do you bring that inquisitive expertise to your thought leadership?
👀 Know what you’re investigating! Be able to state it in a sentence or two. Otherwise, you’ll get pulled down rabbit holes.
❓Ask smart questions and be ready with follow-ups. This applies to both qualitative interviews as well as research hypotheses.
💫 Pay attention to details. Often the biggest insights come from subtle cues.
📈 Know your organization’s goals. Let them inspire you to share authentic, timely information. that highlights the best parts.
📢 Improve your communication. The way you share your insights matters. You need clarity, good timing, and persuasive wording.
Spend time thinking about where your org wants to go. See where that will spark fresh ideas.
And remember, many good ideas will come from paying attention to other people/orgs.
Listen carefully to what other experts have to say.
