Last month, I had the pleasure of being a guest on Harvard Alumni Entrepreneurs’ videocast, “HAE Thought Leader Writing Incubator” with Regina Ryan, president of HAE.
Our topic was “Taking Ideas to Scale Through Thought Leadership,” and we had a lively discussion about thought leadership strategy, using thought leadership in startups, and the value of enterprise-scale thought leadership.
Thought leadership is all about making impact at scale.
That’s why it’s especially critical for startups to use thought leadership – right from the beginning.
It’s fundamental. You need to reach the right people, build your reputation, and distinguish yourself in the field. And that’s exactly what thought leadership does!
For thought leadership to really elevate your startup, you need three things:
- You need to know who your target audience is, and where to find them;
- You’ve got to connect your thought leadership to your business objectives, and;
- Internally, you’ve got to be clear about what you’re trying to achieve.
One of the best parts of our conversation centered around taking “ideas on the edge” and working to those ideas can become reality – moving from the academic exercise of talking about ideas, to actually incorporating them and making business better.
That’s exactly where startups and thought leadership align:
Bringing strong, new ideas to the forefront, getting people excited about them, and then building those ideas into reality.
I had a great time on the videocast, and I hope you’ll take some time to listen to the episode, and let me know your thoughts.
As we reach the end of 2022 and the beginning of a new year, I’d also like to thank you all for being part of our OrgTL outreach. Great things are on the horizon for thought leadership, and I can’t wait to see what the new year brings.
If you’d like to do a “get to know each other” or catch-up call with me, here’s a link to my calendar.
I’d love to talk shop about thought leadership with you.
Warmly,
Bill Sherman
